I feel the need to let Dr Bonello know that his letter to Mr Falzon contains some serious allegations (TMIS, 26 August).

As a lawyer, Dr Bonello should be aware that even if his clients are “innocent” it still does not give them the right to ask Mr Falzon to give up any rights he may have regarding the case. It is simply an injustice! Besides, such a statement on Dr Bonello’s part would have us believe that in our judicial system, our courts and / or Ombudsman would have the “innocent” make amends. And to claim, as Dr Bonello does, that our justice system judges the legality of past actions in terms of today’s standards would create havoc! Dr Bonello is simply imposing interpretations and conditions that appear nowhere in the Ombudsman’s final decision.

A word of advice − Dr Bonello should be aware that, as a lawyer, his job is not to parrot his client’s words but to make sure they are acting within the law’s parameters, and asking a person to forfeit his rights to get what the Ombudsman decided is his (actually he is getting less than half) is simply unjust, illegal and bullying. And please don’t insult the reader’s intelligence again with the absurd statement that it is unethical to provide a reference to the criteria you claim justified the evaluation of Mr Falzon’s degree in 1996 − ever heard of transparency?
